Burns, Pierce take Arizona Corporation Commission seats for GOP; Garcia, Jennings lead among Democrats

The race for two seats on the Arizona Corporation Commission was narrowed to four Tuesday night, with an incumbent commissioner and former commissioner looking like they would move on.

On the Republican ticket, current Commissioner Gary Pierce and former legislator Brenda Burns were taking the two spots available, keeping distance from former Commissioner Barry Wong in the three-way race.

The Republican side of the ticket had become involved in the heated debate over Arizona’s new immigration law. Pierce has sent a letter Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa suggesting that the city stop buying Arizona power after its council voted to boycott Arizona companies in the wake of passage of SB 1070 quick guaranteed personal loans.

Wong had injected himself into the debate as well, suggesting local utilities should bar illegal immigrants from buying power.

On the Democratic ticket, former long-term commission member Renz Jennings and Tucson legislator Jorge Luis Garcia were leading a tight race over former legislator David Bradley, also from Tucson.
