Workplace deaths rise in D-FW
The Dallas-Fort Worth area had 73 workplace fatalities in 2009, a 14 percent increase from last year when 64 D-FW area residents died at work.
The Southwest Information Office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor reported those statistics Thursday. The agency also said workplace fatalities grew across the state. Texas had 480 workplace fatalities last year, up from 463 in 2008.
Most of the fatalities were classified as highway incidents and accounted for 22 percent of work-related deaths. While they were the biggest class of workplace fatalities, the 104 highway deaths reported in 2009 also were the lowest number in that category since 1993.
Workplace homicides in Texas grew by 13 incidents. The state had 68 workplace homicides in 2009, compared to 55 deaths a year earlier.
